IBSD

Director’s Message

BRIC Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) is contributing largely towards the journey of India being a global leader in bio-based economy. Being a research institute, BRIC-IBSD has been and as well currently involve in discovering scientific ways for the sustainable use of the rich bioresources of the North East Region of India. The institute located in the NE India, where biodiversity is at its best, aims towards a more sustainable utilization of the bioresources of NER covering medicinal and aromatic plants, orchids and bamboo, ethnobiological studies, natural product chemistry, microbial diversity, fermented foods and gut microbiota, insect bio resources, freshwater bio resources and aquaculture. For this purpose, the institute highlight the different aspects of research including the
Phytopharmaceutical Mission, Ethnopharmacology & Drug Development, Microbial Resources, Fermented Food and Value Addition, Plant Resources, Animal Resources, Eco-Restoration, and Bioenergy & Biofuel.

With its unique mandate, IBSD has produced a number of outstanding PhD students and serves as an inimitable platform for nurturing many postdoctoral trainees and graduate students with a passion to work towards preserving the bioresources utilizing the different biotechnological skills. IBSD also believes in interdisciplinary approach towards scientific growth of the research community. Additionally, the institute also encourages different disciplinary research including cell and molecular biology, genetics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, systems biology, chemical ecology. The institute has a rich state of the art instruments for the high-end research. The
scientists of the IBSD have made notable contributions in the scientific community that highlights the institute worldwide through publications in well-known journals. The institute also nurtures Postdoctoral fellows with distinguished awards like Ramalingaswami Fellows, MK Bhan Young Researcher Fellows and DBT–BioCARe Fellows.

Apart from these, the institute actively involve in outreach activities for the societal benefit as well as reach out to the younger generations of the schools and colleges to strengthen the scientific knowledge and outlook.

With its establishment at Imphal in 2001, the Institute has expanded in different centers at Shillong, Meghalaya; Gangtok, Sikkim; and Aizawl, Mizoram. The active participation of the committed Administrative staff and Scientists in Imphal and at its different centres continues to drive the Institute towards achieving the aim of the Institute in Bioresource conservation, development of the bioresources and contribute in driving India towards biobased economy.

In the last decade IBSD has positioned itself among the best Institutes in India with renowned publications, patents and products. With the new responsibility granted on me, I go on board with extreme enthusiasm and determination to make the Institute shine contributing in the journey of India towards a global leader in bio-based economy. My personal goal is to nurture the young scientists for advancement in biotechnology in India with core values of teamwork, compassion, and innovation so that the Institute represent a figure of bioresource conservation for an accelerated green growth in India.
